When the grid drops and your UPS has 5 to 15 minutes to keep the load alive, you do not want a 20-hour capacity monobloc — you want a battery engineered for high-rate discharge. The HGUX series is that battery. Nineteen 12 V AGM models rated from 28 W/cell to 1250 W/cell, with the low internal resistance and the thick plate structure that a true UPS duty cycle demands. It is the right cell for online double-conversion UPS plants, EPS systems, IDC battery cabinets and any site where the discharge event lasts minutes, not hours.

What is the HGUX?

HGUX is the high-power branch of the HGU platform. Inside each cell, the active material is formulated for high-current discharge rather than for long float endurance. The plates are thicker, the grid is heavier, and the AGM separator has lower resistance than the equivalent-capacity HGU-12V monobloc. The result is a 12 V monobloc that delivers three to four times the watts-per-cell of a general-purpose AGM monobloc during the first five minutes of discharge — without paying for the long-hour capacity you do not need.

Frequently asked questions

1. Why does HGUX publish power (watts) rather than capacity (ampere-hours)?

UPS ride-through is a power problem, not an energy problem. The 15-minute watt rating tells the UPS designer exactly how many watts the cell will deliver for the 15-minute window of the standard ride-through test, which is far more useful than an ampere-hour rating measured at a 20-hour rate.

2. Can I replace my existing UPS battery with HGUX without changing the UPS?

Yes — HGUX is a 12 V monobloc in a standard footprint. The UPS float-voltage setting (13.5 V) and equalise ceiling (13.8–14.4 V) are the same as for any AGM VRLA monobloc, so no UPS parameter change is needed. You will, however, see longer runtime and tighter voltage hold at the existing load.

3. Is HGUX suitable for float-standby at 25 °C all year?

Yes — HGUX has a float design life of up to 12 years at 25 °C, similar to general AGM monoblocs. The high-rate plate structure does not penalise float life; it simply delivers more power during the discharge event.

4. What end voltage should I design for?

For a 15-minute ride-through at the published watt rating, the end voltage per cell is 1.67 V, giving 10.0 V at the 12 V monobloc level. For shorter (5-minute) ride-through, the end voltage is typically 1.60 V per cell (9.6 V at the monobloc). Always confirm against your UPS inverter's low-voltage disconnect setting.

5. Can I parallel multiple HGUX strings?

Yes — HGUX cells are matched in voltage and internal resistance at the factory and can be paralleled in strings of any length. Common configurations are 32-cell (384 V) and 40-cell (480 V) strings for medium-to-large UPS plants.

6. What about the HGUX12-800W 2 V model?

The 2 V cell HGUX12-800W is the high-power single cell for very large UPS plants where the system DC bus is built from 2 V cells rather than 12 V monoblocs. It delivers 800 W per cell at the 15-minute rate and is intended for retrofit of legacy 2 V-cell battery rooms.

7. Does HGUX need special ventilation?

HGUX is a sealed VRLA monobloc with a one-way pressure-relief valve. Hydrogen evolution during float charge is minimal (within the IEC 60896-21 envelope) and standard UPS-cabinet ventilation is sufficient. For indoor battery rooms exceeding 100 kW of charging, follow local ventilation codes.

8. Is HGUX more expensive than HGU-12V?

Yes — the heavy-duty plate structure adds cost. The economics work in your favour when the discharge event is minutes long, because a smaller HGUX string delivers the same ride-through as a much larger HGU-12V string. For long-hour float duty, HGU-12V is the more cost-effective choice.
