HGUG — Tubular GEL Battery for Daily Cycling and Renewable Hybrid Storage

20 tubular-plate GEL models from 38 Ah to 3000 Ah — built for daily deep cycling and partial state-of-charge duty

If your battery is going to be discharged every day, you need more than a flat-plate AGM monobloc. The HGUG family is the tubular-plate GEL branch of the HGU platform — positive plates built from extruded tubular gauntlets filled with active material, electrolyte gelled with fumed silica, and a case designed for the deep-cycling reality of solar hybrid, microgrid and unstable-grid telecom sites. Twenty models from 38 Ah to 3000 Ah, in both 2 V cells and 12 V monoblocs, share the same float/equalise profile and the same cell hardware. Cycle life is rated at 1500 cycles at 50 % depth of discharge and over 5000 cycles at 20 % depth of discharge.

What is the HGUG?

HGUG is the deep-cycle, tubular-plate GEL family within the HGU platform. Unlike flat-plate AGM, the positive plate is a tubular gauntlet — a non-woven polyester tube filled with lead dioxide pellets. This construction holds the active material together through thousands of charge-discharge cycles and gives HGUG its signature combination of long cycle life, low self-discharge and good recovery from deep discharge. The electrolyte is immobilised as a thixotropic GEL, so the cell is sealed and maintenance-free, but the GEL chemistry also resists stratification and thermal runaway better than AGM in daily-cycling service.

  • 20 capacity steps from 38 Ah to 3000 Ah (C10 rate, 1.80 V/cell end voltage)

  • 2 V cells and 12 V monoblocs on the same platform

  • Tubular positive plate, GEL electrolyte, sealed VRLA construction

  • Cycle life 1500 cycles at 50 % DoD, 2800 cycles at 40 % DoD, 5000+ cycles at 20 % DoD

  • Float design life 15 years at 25 °C

  • Operating temperature -20 °C to +45 °C

Where HGUG fits

HGUG is engineered for sites that cycle the battery every day, not for sites that float it for years between rare discharge events:

  • Off-grid solar PV and solar hybrid systems

  • Microgrid buffer storage and remote-community power

  • Wind-hybrid and PV-wind-diesel hybrid plants

  • Telecom base stations on unstable grid or diesel-only sites

  • Traffic-light, motorway-control and railway-signalling DC supplies

  • Agricultural pumping and irrigation battery banks

  • Residential energy storage and small commercial PV-backup

Why choose the HGUG series

1. Tubular positive plate for long cycle life

  • Tubular gauntlets retain active material through thousands of cycles

  • Lower plate-growth and grid corrosion than flat-plate AGM at high DoD

  • Better recovery from accidental over-discharge

2. GEL electrolyte for harsh environments

  • Immobilised GEL resists stratification in partial state-of-charge operation

  • Better thermal stability than AGM at high ambient temperature

  • Lower gas evolution — safe for cabinets with minimal ventilation

  • Wide operating window -20 °C to +45 °C without capacity loss

3. Float and cycle on the same cell

  • Same 2.23–2.27 V/cell float profile as the rest of the HGU platform

  • Cycle charge 2.30–2.40 V/cell for fast PV recharge

  • Compatible with common MPPT solar charge controllers

Common platform across the HGUG family

  • Tubular positive plate, GEL electrolyte, VRLA construction

  • Float voltage 2.23–2.27 V/cell at 25 °C, temperature-compensated -3 mV/°C/cell

  • Equalise / cycle charge 2.30–2.40 V/cell for up to 24 h

  • Operating temperature -20 °C to +45 °C (recommended 20–25 °C)

  • Self-discharge below 3 % per month at 25 °C

  • Container and cover ABS, flame-retardant to UL94 V-0 on request

  • Cycle life 1500 cycles at 50 % DoD, 2800 cycles at 40 % DoD, 5000+ cycles at 20 % DoD

Frequently asked questions

1. What is the difference between HGUG and a flat-plate AGM monobloc?

HGUG uses a tubular positive plate — extruded polyester gauntlets filled with lead dioxide pellets — whereas flat-plate AGM uses a solid pasted plate. The tubular construction retains active material through many more charge-discharge cycles, which is why HGUG delivers 1500 cycles at 50 % DoD versus the ~500 cycles typical of flat-plate AGM at the same depth.

2. Can HGUG be used as a pure float-standby battery?

Yes. HGUG floats at the same 2.23–2.27 V/cell as the rest of the HGU platform and can sit in float standby for years. Many operators choose HGUG specifically because it gives them both the float standby rating they need today and the cycling headroom they may need tomorrow if the site conditions change.

3. Is HGUG suitable for partial state-of-charge (PSoC) operation?

Yes — this is exactly what HGUG is built for. In a solar-hybrid microgrid that never reaches 100 % state-of-charge, HGUG retains more capacity over time than flat-plate AGM. For extreme PSoC duty (micro-cycles several times a day), consider the HGUC lead-carbon family instead.

4. Can HGUG be charged from a standard solar MPPT controller?

Yes — set the MPPT absorption stage to 2.30–2.40 V/cell (13.8–14.4 V for a 12 V monobloc) for up to 24 hours, then drop to float at 2.23–2.27 V/cell (13.4–13.6 V for 12 V). HGUG tolerates the typical MPPT sweep profile without harm.

5. How long does HGUG last in daily solar-cycling service?

In a daily 50 % depth-of-discharge cycle at 25 °C, expect 1500 cycles (about 4 years of service). In a 20 % daily cycle, expect 5000+ cycles (about 13 years). For sites warmer than 25 °C, derate cycle life by ~50 % per 8 °C.

6. What is the difference between the 2 V cells and the 12 V monoblocs in HGUG?

Both use the same tubular plate and GEL chemistry. The 12 V monoblocs are convenient for smaller battery banks (under 500 Ah) where the DC bus voltage is 12 V or 24 V. The 2 V cells are the building block for 48 V telecom plants and large solar battery banks from 100 Ah to 3000 Ah per cell.

7. Does HGUG need watering?

No — HGUG is sealed VRLA with immobilised GEL electrolyte. There is no access port for topping-up and no scheduled maintenance other than torque checks and visual inspection.

8. Is HGUG compatible with lithium-ion chargers?

No — HGUG is a lead-acid GEL cell and must be charged with a lead-acid charge profile. Using a lithium-ion charger on HGUG will undercharge the cell and permanently reduce capacity. Always use a lead-acid-compatible charger with the correct float, absorption and equalise settings.
